The Days After the North Cebu Earthquake

Less than 48 hours after the quake, on Thursday morning, Yang rode his motorcycle up north to Daanbantayan to check on Arriyus Apartelle. He went to help his dad, who manages the place. Thankfully, the building held strong and suffered no major damage. Power came back in Daanbantayan after a few days, and guests even continued to book despite the ongoing aftershocks.

Yang stayed in Daanbantayan until Saturday night. Normally, the drive home from the north takes 3 to 4 hours (faster if on a motorcycle), but this time it took him over 7 hours! The roads were packed, but for a good reason.

The northbound lanes were full of private cars, trucks, and motorcycles carrying relief goods. Government and private groups were all heading the same way. The traffic stretched for kilometers, but no one complained. It was a rare moment when congestion felt like a sign of hope, proof that Cebuanos were showing up for one another.

As of today (a week after the quake), PHIVOLCS has already recorded more than 8,000 aftershocks! Thankfully, only a few were felt here in Mactan. Still, every time the dogs barked for no reason, we would pause and wonder if another tremor was starting.

Scenes From North Cebu

When my husband reached San Remigio, Bogo City, and Hagnaya Port, he saw the worst of what the North Cebu earthquake had done. Buildings and homes had collapsed. Cracks split across roads. Familiar landmarks were gone.

He passed by the district hospital where body bags were laid out in front, a sobering reminder that this wasn’t just about damaged property. As of now, the death toll has surpassed 70, with hundreds injured and thousands displaced.

Many families were camping out in open fields, afraid to stay indoors. Some were sleeping by the roadside, close enough to flag down passing vehicles in hopes of getting food or water.

Yang didn’t talk much about it when he got home. I think it was too heavy to put into words.

Bayanihan After the North Cebu Earthquake

Despite the destruction, what stood out most was the bayanihan that followed. Within hours, donation drives were launched across Cebu. Everyone wanted to help.

Even though I’m currently between jobs, I gave what I could: small cash donations to volunteer groups and bags of rice, noodles, water, and biscuits for churchmates whose families in Bogo City lost their homes.

At Arriyus Apartelle, a volunteer group reached out asking if they could use our space for a relief operation. The nearby neighborhood didn’t have parking space, so we offered our property. They parked their trucks, unloaded supplies, and began distributing goods to residents. It was simple but powerful. The smiles on people’s faces said everything.

Below is a compilation of photos my husband captured on the way home. North Cebu residents have lost so much, yet they remain super thankful to everyone who helped with the earthquake relief efforts. Some held up signs thanking motorists, while others offered free food and drinks. So heartwarming to see Cebu bayanihan in action! 

Reflections From Cebu

This quake has been one of the hardest events Cebu has faced in years. The stories coming out of the north are heartbreaking: entire families lost, children found clinging to their parents, homes reduced to rubble.

But once again, the strength of Cebuanos shone through. When Typhoon Odette hit Metro Cebu and South Cebu in 2021, it was the people of North Cebu who helped us. Now it’s our turn to return that kindness, and the response has been overwhelming.

Living in the Philippines means facing nature’s tests over and over again: typhoons, floods, earthquakes. Yet we always rise. Every time, our compassion outlasts the chaos.

I’m not Cebuana by birth, but after living here since 2009, I can honestly say this place is special. The people, the kindness, the way everyone looks out for each other — that’s what keeps me proud to call Cebu home.

How We Prepared Our Cats The Night Before Their Spay and Neuter Surgery? 

The vet’s instructions were clear: no food or water for at least 8-12 hours before surgery. Sounds simple, right? Not when your cats are used to roaming outside and eating whenever they please.

Alexander, my orange boy, is mellow and doesn’t mind being indoors. Maddie, his calico sister, is the complete opposite; she’s independent, loud, and stubborn. Locking her inside overnight felt like preparing for battle.

Anyway, we made sure both cats had their fill before midnight, which was at least 9 hours before the event started at 9 am the following day.

At midnight, we set up my son’s bedroom with a litter box, their crates, and even a CCTV camera so we could keep an eye on them. My son slept in our room that night, so the cats had the whole space to themselves.

And what a night it was. They meowed endlessly, staged zoomies around the room, and even managed to knock the CCTV over, so we lost our live feed. By morning, the room was a disaster. LOL! Litter was scattered everywhere, and poop was both in and out of the box. Luckily, we had a waterproof mattress cover and a leather couch, so cleanup wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been.

The silver lining was that fasting had been successful, and they were surprisingly cooperative when it was time to get them into their crates.

Why Did I Decide to Spay and Neuter My Cats?

Maddie had already given birth twice — 5 kittens the first time, 4 the second. During her spay, the vets confirmed she was pregnant again and had to perform an abortion. As much as I love kittens, I didn’t want to keep going through unexpected litters.

Alexander, meanwhile, was acting like a textbook tomcat. At only a year and a half old, he’d disappear for days at a time, returning with scratches, bald spots, and that wild “I’ve been fighting” look.

Beyond my personal reasons, there are important health and behavior benefits:

• Females are less likely to develop pyometra (a dangerous uterine infection) and certain cancers.
• Males become less territorial, fight less, and are less likely to roam.
• Both sexes live calmer, healthier lives overall.

How Did I Feel Before the Cat Spay and Neuter Surgery?

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Surgery, no matter how routine, always carries risks. I’d even seen a video where a cat had to be revived because the owner didn’t follow fasting rules. That haunted me the whole night before their operation.

The vet checklist was strict: the cats had to be healthy, not vomiting or having diarrhea, not nursing, and preferably not in heat. They had to arrive in secure crates. Maddie and Alexander passed all these requirements, but I still couldn’t shake the worry.

What Was the Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Process Like in Cebu?

The surgery was held at Pacific Mall in Mandaue. We left the house around 8 a.m., crates in tow. Maddie howled the entire drive, while Alexander stayed quiet and resigned to his fate.

By the time I arrived at the 3rd floor around 9:15 a.m., registration had just opened, but the line was already long. We were assigned numbers 102 and 103. Clearly, the event was popular. Later, I learned they operated on nearly 200 animals that day.

The waiting stretched for 4 hours, but chatting with other pet owners helped pass the time. Many had done this before and shared tips about recovery, meds, and what to expect.

When our turn finally came, the vets anesthetized both cats quickly and carried them into the operating room. I caught a glimpse of Maddie’s belly being shaved before the curtain closed.

Alexander’s neuter took just 2 minutes. He was brought out unconscious, tongue lolling, looking almost comical. 

Maddie’s spay procedure lasted longer (maybe 15 to 20 minutes) since it included an abortion. Despite that, she woke up almost immediately afterward, while Alexander stayed knocked out for another 40 minutes.

Both looked “drunk” — wobbly legs, glassy eyes, confused expressions. Once they were semi-awake, they received their free anti-rabies shots, and we were cleared to head home.

What Was Recovery Like for My Cats at Home?

The vet’s instructions were simple:

• Keep them indoors for at least 5 days.
• Don’t let them lick, bite or chew their wounds.
• Give all prescribed antibiotics, pain relievers, and vitamins on schedule.
• Monitor their appetite, litter box use, and energy levels.

Simple, yes. Easy, no.

The "cones of shame" were a disaster at first. They slipped them off within the first hour. We ended up taping the cones to make them more secure, and eventually, the cats gave up fighting them.

Feeding was messy. Their cones made eating and drinking awkward, and they didn’t have much appetite on the first day. We initially spoon-fed them wet food, then switched back to dry food once they were steadier on their feet.

Giving meds was a two-person job. One of us held the cat firmly while the other syringed the liquid straight into the throat. Our cats were prescribed:

• Co-Amoxiclav (antibiotic) → 1 ml twice a day for 7 days

• Tolfenol (pain reliever) → 0.6 ml once a day for 5 days

• Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) → 2 ml once a day until finished

By Day 2, they were noticeably better. By Day 10, their wounds had healed, fur was growing back, and they were back to their usual antics.

How Much Did Cat Spay and Neuter Cost in Cebu?

Here’s the exact breakdown of what I paid at the low-cost event:

• Maddie: ₱900 (spay) + ₱500 (abortion)
• Alexander: ₱800 (neuter)
• Medicines: ₱400 (antibiotic, pain reliever, vitamin C)

Total: ₱3,000 (including a ₱400 slot reservation fee paid a couple of weeks prior).

For comparison, I had previously inquired at a private clinic and was quoted around ₱15,000 for both cats. That’s five times more expensive!

What Did I Learn From My Cats’ Spay and Neuter Journey?

That the hardest part isn’t the surgery, it’s everything around it. From the sleepless night before to taping cones and cleaning messes, it’s an exercise in patience and love.

But it was absolutely worth it. Both Maddie and Alexander are healthier, calmer, and safer. And I saved a huge amount by joining the low-cost program.

Would I Spay or Neuter My Cats Again in the Future?

Yes, without hesitation. Maddie’s son Blackiki (so named because he looks like a black striped tiger, haha!) is next in line once he’s old enough. If he inherits his mom’s loud voice, I’d better prepare my ears for another noisy car ride.

Spaying and neutering may feel intimidating, especially the first time. But it’s one of the best things you can do for your cats' health, your sanity, and the greater good.

The Hair Dye Detour

Let me back up a little. I did try dyeing my hair once.

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision at Watsons, where I picked up a cheap box of GlamWorks hair dye for about ₱50. I went home excited, gloves on, ready to transform myself into a glossy-haired goddess.

And for a brief moment, it worked. The dark brown-black looked sleek, and I felt like I had pressed rewind on the aging process.

But here’s the thing: that feeling was short-lived.

• The color faded fast.

• The roots grew in quicker than weeds.

• The cycle of re-dyeing felt exhausting.

Do I really want to spend hours bent over a sink, gloves on, smelling like chemicals, just to hide what my body is naturally doing? The answer, quite quickly, became a resounding no.

I never made it to the salon chair either. For one, the costs add up. And two, the idea of spending half a day under foils and hair dryers sounded more like a punishment than pampering.

So I stopped. No more boxes of dye. No salon schedules. Just me, my natural hair, and a trusty hair bun to disguise the explosion of salt and pepper strands.

Character Over Perfection

At first, I thought white hair would make me look “old” in a way I wasn’t ready for.

Isn’t that what society drills into us? Gray and white strands are framed as the enemy, something to be battled with touch-ups, highlights, and endless “anti-aging” products.

But somewhere along the way, my mindset shifted. I realized white hair doesn’t just signal age. It signals life, experience, and character.

When I catch my reflection now, I see the difference. Sure, my face is changing, and my hair has transformed into its salt-and-pepper phase. But the eyes staring back at me still feel like the same 20-something me.

Inside, I’m still that person. Aging feels like this odd split-screen: the outside shifting and marking time, while the inside still feels young and curious.

And honestly, I’ve grown to like it. White hair softens me. It’s proof that I’ve lived through challenges, laughter, and countless cups of coffee.

Crossing the Line Into Not Caring

Here’s the real gift that came with turning 40: I crossed an invisible line where other people’s opinions stopped carrying so much weight.

Before, I might have worried about what coworkers, neighbors, or random strangers thought of my appearance. Should I look “younger”? Should I keep up with trends? Should I cover the white?

Now, at 42, I feel an almost rebellious freedom in not giving a damn.

Aging is a privilege. I know people who never made it to 40. I know people who spend thousands on cosmetic procedures trying to preserve an illusion of youth.

Me? I don’t have the money, the patience, or the interest. So I choose to accept what time is giving me: the chance to age naturally, gracefully, and unapologetically.

And let me tell you, it feels incredible.

The Economics of Vanity

Maintaining dyed hair is expensive. Not just in money, but in time.

• Salon visits eat up hours.

• Box dyes need constant retouching.

• Products to keep dyed hair from drying out add more costs.

Add it all up, and you’re basically paying a monthly subscription fee to fight biology.

I did the math. Over a year, even just quarterly salon visits could easily add up to tens of thousands of pesos. That’s money I’d rather spend on good food, travel, or even paying bills.

For me, vanity lost the economic argument.

Never a Fashionista

Here’s another truth: I’ve never been a fashionista.

Some women love makeup, hair styling, and fashion. That’s their art form, their joy. For me, it’s never been a big deal. I was never the type to match lipstick shades with outfits or follow hair trends.

So really, why would I start now in my 40s?

Instead, I lean into practicality. My hair bun hides the white explosion while still looking put-together. My low-maintenance routine saves me hours every month. And best of all, I feel like myself.

White Hair as Achievement

When I think about it, my white hair is like a badge of honor.

It’s proof that I’ve made it this far. Every strand is a marker of survival, through late nights, stress, joy, heartbreak, and everything in between.

There’s also gratitude. Every time I see those silver threads, I remind myself: I woke up today. I’m still here. Another day to spend with family, work on my passions, and experience life.

That feels like an achievement worth celebrating.

If I Could Tell My Younger Self…

If I could sit down with my younger self, the one carefully plucking out single white hairs in her 30s, I’d tell her this:

There’s nothing to be afraid of. Aging is normal. It’s not a punishment, it’s a privilege.

Stop worrying about how you look in other people’s eyes, because those same people are too busy worrying about themselves.

Be grateful for every day, love yourself, and be kind to others. That’s what really matters.

My Evolving Definition of Beauty

In my 20s, beauty meant perfection: smooth skin, shiny hair, no blemishes.

In my 30s, beauty started to mean balance: between work, family, and self-care.

Now, in my 40s, beauty means authenticity.

Natural beauty will always win over surgically enhanced beauty in my book. Not because surgery is “bad,” but because authenticity feels more grounded and real.

I admire women who own their age, who let their lines, curves, and yes, white hair, tell their story.

That’s the kind of beauty I aspire to now.

A Celebration, Not a Defense

I’m not writing this to defend my choice not to dye my hair. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with dyeing, just like there’s nothing wrong with not dyeing.

This is simply my way of celebrating the freedom that comes with saying, “This is me. Take it or leave it.”

At 42, I’ve decided I’m not going to spend my precious time and energy hiding the signs of a life well-lived. Instead, I’m going to wear them with pride.

Daanbantayan may be a small town, but there’s more to it than just being the jump-off point to Malapascua. Whether you’re into island-hopping, lazy beach days, or just soaking in the coastal scenery, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied here.

Malapascua Island

Let’s get this out of the way first: Malapascua Island is Daanbantayan’s crown jewel. From Maya Port, you can hop on a public boat to the island for around 100–150 pesos per person (prices may vary depending on the season). Boats generally run between 6 AM and 5 PM, though trips always depend on the Coast Guard’s go-signal, especially if the weather turns rough.

If you’re up for an early start, a day trip is doable. Swim at Bounty Beach, snorkel, or just lounge under the palms. But honestly, Malapascua deserves at least an overnight stay. It’s famous for scuba diving with thresher sharks, but even if you’re not into diving, the powdery beaches, island vibes, and clear waters make it unforgettable. If you miss the last boat back, no worries. You can always crash at Arriyus Apartelle, which sits right beside the port.

Mainland Beaches

Daanbantayan itself has a few lovely beachfronts worth checking out. The high-end Kandaya Resort offers luxury, while Golden Sands combines comfort with great beach access.

For something simple, our family has often stayed at Skips Beach Resort, a budget-friendly beachfront option. Just one tip: go during high tide if you plan on swimming. At low tide, you can literally walk 300 meters into the sea and still only be knee-deep in water! It’s hilarious, but not great if you’re itching for a swim.

Food Experiences

For meals, Sugbo Maya is the closest restaurant to Arriyus Apartelle, perfect if you don’t want to head all the way to town. The town center itself has more eateries, mostly serving local fare. Fresh seafood, of course, is a must.

Photography Spots

If you love capturing sunrises and sunsets, you’ll be spoiled here. From Maya Port and even from the balconies of Arriyus Apartelle, the views are breathtaking. Mornings often glow pink and orange, while evenings paint the sea in deep gold.

Where to Stay in Daanbantayan?

There’s a wide range of options in Daanbantayan, from small guesthouses to upscale resorts. But if you’re after location, convenience, and family-style comfort, I’ll be a little biased and say Arriyus Apartelle is your best bet.

A Family Apartelle Experience

What makes Arriyus special isn’t just that it’s my husband’s family’s property, it’s that it genuinely makes sense for travelers. It’s the last building before Maya Port, which means if you’re heading to Malapascua, you literally can’t get closer to the boats. No need to drag luggage across town or scramble for a ride to the pier.

The apartelle itself has 8 air-conditioned rooms, each with a private bathroom, free toiletries, WiFi, and the deluxe rooms even have balconies where you can catch sea breezes. Families and groups especially love it because of the spacious layout and outdoor dining area on the ground floor where you can gather. Guests consistently comment on the cleanliness and the warm, attentive staff.

On the ground floor, there’s a mini-grocery, a lifesaver when you suddenly realize you need bottled water, snacks, or even basic toiletries. Free parking is available, and for those flying in, there’s also an airport shuttle service (for a fee).

Compared to hotels, Arriyus offers a more laid-back, local feel. You won’t find infinity pools or buffet spreads here, but you will find comfort, convenience, and a prime location. During peak season (summer and holidays), rooms book out quickly, so it’s best to reserve in advance.

Best Times to Visit 

Like most of the Philippines, Daanbantayan has two main seasons: dry (December to May) and rainy (June to November). If you’re aiming for Malapascua, always check the weather. Boats won’t run if the seas are rough.

Crowds peak during summer months (March–May) and holidays, when locals head home for reunions or quick getaways. Personally, I like visiting whenever the “stars align” - a family gathering, good weather, and school holidays all happening at once.

Practical Tips

• What to pack: Light clothing, sunscreen, and swimwear if you’re headed for Malapascua. Bring cash as ATMs are limited in Maya.
• Communication: Mobile signal is decent, and most accommodations (including Arriyus) offer free WiFi.
• Safety: Daanbantayan is generally quiet and safe. Most foreign tourists don’t stay long on the mainland and just pass through to Malapascua.
• Cultural tip: Locals speak Bisaya, but with a distinct Daanbantayan accent. The first time I heard it, I was both fascinated and a little lost - it’s fast! But give it a day or two, and you’ll find yourself catching on.

My Honest Take

What keeps me coming back to Daanbantayan isn’t flashy attractions, but the simple pleasures. Maya in particular has my heart: the sea breeze, the greenery, the lack of traffic, the friendliness of the people, and yes, the comfy rooms at Arriyus.

Is it perfect? Not in the polished, touristy sense. But that’s exactly what makes it charming. It’s not for everyone. If you’re after malls, nightlife, or endless dining options, this isn’t your stop. But if you want a laid-back coastal town that’s both a gateway to Malapascua and a destination in itself, Daanbantayan will win you over.

And as for me? I’ll keep coming back because in many ways, Daanbantayan already feels like home.

The Journey There: Bacolod to Dumanggas by RORO

We boarded the Tri-Star RORO from Bacolod, Negros Occidental to Dumanggas, Iloilo with our ever-reliable Toyota Innova. 

Total cost: ₱1,756 (₱1,000 for the car, ₱386 arastre fee, plus passenger and terminal fees).

The system was first-come, first-served. No reservations, no guarantees. That meant we had to wait until an employee confirmed our car could fit, then scramble to buy tickets at the last minute. If you’ve never done this before, imagine a mix of relief and stress as you inch forward in line, praying your car makes the cut.

Once onboard, though, things felt calmer. My husband called me to look at the black jellyfish surrounding the ship, and it was both mesmerizing and unsettling! I’d only ever seen white, translucent jellyfish before. But these black ones (hundreds of them) looked like dark balloons floating beneath the waves. We joked nervously about how awful it would be to fall in, though the water itself was calm, the sky clear, and the breeze refreshing.

The ferry offered seating upstairs in a huge air-conditioned hall, plus open-air benches outside. My family and I checked it out briefly, but it was crowded, so we retreated to the car instead. Our Innova has already proven itself fuel-efficient even on long RORO rides, so with the aircon blasting on full cold, we simply stretched out and enjoyed the 2-hour ride in private. Honestly, it was the most comfortable way to cross. 

First Impressions of Iloilo

From Dumanggas, it took us about an hour to drive into Iloilo City. My dad, who’d been to Dumanggas years ago for work, shared funny stories as we made our way into the city. There were plenty of fish ponds and seafood restaurants lining the coast, but we didn’t stop by as we wanted to check in on time.

The outskirts looked like any typical Philippine city center. I thought it looked pretty similar to downtown Cebu, Mandaue, or Lapu-Lapu. But the moment we entered Iloilo Business Park, everything changed.

Wide streets, polished sidewalks, and towering modern buildings greeted us. It felt more like Cebu IT Park or Cebu Business Park than the usual provincial capital. This area, developed by Megaworld (the same company behind Mactan Newtown), gave the city a cosmopolitan vibe I didn’t expect.

Our Home Base: Saint Honore Executive

We booked a 2-bedroom unit at Saint Honore Executive through Booking.com for 2 nights.

The building’s hotel-like lobby welcomed us with cool air and a faint scent of fresh linen. Our unit was on the 6th floor, a corner space with sweeping views of Iloilo Business Park. We could see SM Iloilo nearby and the glow of the Festive Walk Mall at night.

Inside, the condo felt like a real home. The living room had a giant TV (with Netflix, of course) and a cozy pull-out couch with a colorful throw blanket that gave the place personality. 

My parents took the master bedroom, which had its own balcony, while my husband, son, and I shared the second room with the bunk bed. Of course, Marco took the upper bunk. He loved the room because it was decorated with planets and solar system designs, it felt like his own little universe.

The kitchen was fully equipped, though we didn’t cook much, and the bathroom had excellent water pressure and hot/cold options (a blessing after long, sweaty days). The building even had a pool, though we never got around to using it, something we regret. In hindsight, I should have booked at least one more night just to relax.

Day 1: Friday Night in Iloilo

After settling in, we decided to walk around. It was Friday night, and the business park was buzzing. Festive Walk Mall was lit up, the Emperador Brandy Museum stood proudly with food trucks parked outside, and locals strolled the streets enjoying the lively atmosphere.

We walked to Beng’s Seafood, just outside the business park, and picked up dinner. For less than ₱1,000, we had a hearty seafood meal that was both tasty and affordable. Carrying it back through the lively streets, with music playing and the night air cooling down, felt like the perfect start to our Iloilo experience.

Day 2: Church, Food, and Molo Mansion

The next day, we crossed the Iloilo River to head towards the locale of Iloilo City to attend church service. From the outside, their kapilya looked modest, but inside it opened up into a massive, fully air-conditioned hall. That day was especially historic: it was the oath-taking of our assistant executive minister, livestreamed to over 2,000 locales worldwide. Being part of that moment, right there in Iloilo, was both moving and memorable.

Later that afternoon, we headed to Molo Mansion. I thought it would be like The Ruins in Bacolod, a quiet and reflective place. Instead, it was the opposite. Music filled the air, kids ran around the gardens, couples walked their dogs, and food stalls lined one side of the property.

Parking was easy (plenty of space at the back), and the atmosphere was lively. Inside, the mansion itself was a bit underwhelming, mostly filled with Kultura Filipino products you’d also find in SM. But outside, the vibe was festive. We bought pasalubong, grabbed some ice cream for Marco, and settled in for dinner from the on-site restaurants.

It wasn’t historic grandeur that made Molo Mansion special, but its role as a community space, a place where locals and visitors alike gathered to relax, eat, and enjoy the nice weather.

Day 3: The Dumanggas Port Nightmare

Our plan was simple: leave by noon, catch a ferry, and be back in Bacolod well before dinner. Reality had other ideas.

We arrived at Dumanggas Port at 12:30 PM. What followed was seven grueling hours of waiting.

The system was chaotic. Three shipping lines were operating, all reportedly “fully booked” for two or three trips ahead. Our only choice was to wait in line and hope. We chose Montenegro Shipping, which had the shortest queue.

At first, we stayed in the car with the aircon running. By mid-afternoon, hunger struck, so we ventured out to a carinderia outside the port for barbecue and fish. The heat was brutal, the sea breeze was hot and the air sticky, so we hurried back to the sanctuary of our car.

As the hours dragged on, other families began stepping out too, chatting with neighbors and swapping complaints. One man told us, almost casually, “Normal lang yan dito” (That’s normal here). My husband groaned.

By 6:30 PM, we finally got confirmation: our car would make the next trip. We paid at the shipping office and joined the boarding process. Dozens upon dozens of vehicles streamed in. By the time we drove on board, it was past 8 PM.

This wasn’t even a passenger ferry; it was a cargo ship. No seating, no airconditioned hall. Everyone had to stay in their vehicles for the crossing. My husband muttered, “Never again.” My dad, exhausted, said maybe next time we’d just fly. Road trips weren’t for seniors anymore.

I agreed. Dumanggas had tested our patience more than any port before.

The Journey Home

We landed in Bacolod a couple of hours later, but we couldn’t exit the port immediately. There was a long line of cars making their way to the exit. Turns out we had to pay the port fee; thankfully, we could pay at the exit gate and not have to run back inside the port again. 

Anyway, it was pretty close to midnight when we arrived at Nena’s Beth Inasal. There were several tables still occupied, so we weren’t too late. We ordered our food, ate quickly, and pushed on for the mountain drive back to San Carlos City via the Negros Occidental Eco-Tourism Highway.

By the time we reached San Carlos, it was 3 AM. Luckily, I’d booked a family room at the Teacher’s Coop for about ₱1,000, knowing we’d miss the last RORO to Toledo City, Cebu. I didn’t expect to be that late, but the foresight paid off.

The next morning, we took the second FastCat RORO from San Carlos to Toledo (₱3,617 total, with ₱2,500 for the Innova). The first trip left way too early; we were still snoring by then.

What a relief, though, to find that the San Carlos port process was far more organized than Dumanggas. From ticket purchase to boarding, the whole thing took less than an hour. And the best part was they had a proper air-conditioned waiting area where passengers could sit, grab a snack, and relax before boarding.

By early afternoon, we finally rolled back into Mactan. The drive from Toledo took about 3 hours, just enough time to shake off the ferry fatigue before logging back in for work. At the time, I had no idea that only a month later, I’d be on a call with the COO hearing that my 5.5-year contract was ending (read my blog about it here). Life has a funny way of surprising you. Still, I’m grateful I got to use up those vacation leaves.

Lessons Learned: RORO Family Travel Realities

1. If possible, avoid weekend travel. Ports are busier, lines are longer, and chaos is almost guaranteed. 

2. Be ready to wait. Bring snacks, water, and patience. Seven hours may not be unusual in busy ports like Dumanggas, especially during peak travel season.

3. Cars are both blessing and burden. Having our own vehicle made exploration super easy, but the ferry process was exhausting. Each port has their own way of doing things, so first-timers will find it super confusing. Just don’t be shy and ask for help if you need it! You’ll find people are more than willing to help anywhere in the Philippines.

4. Have a backup plan. Book a stopover hotel in case you miss the last ferry. It saved us in San Carlos. Sure, it may be non-refundable, but it will save you lots of stress, especially if traveling with kids and senior family members! 

Practical Summary for Families

• Best base: Iloilo Business Park condos (like Saint Honore) are modern, comfortable, and central.

• Must-try eats: Beng’s Seafood (budget-friendly), Nena’s Beth Inasal, and ice cream at Molo Mansion.

• Best avoided: Dumanggas port on Sundays. Trust me.

• Tip for kids: Bring entertainment and snacks for long waits. Indoor play spots like Festive Walk help too.

• Alternative: If you’re not attached to having a car, take the fast ferry directly to Iloilo City instead of dealing with Dumanggas.

Final Reflections

Despite the Dumanggas ordeal, Iloilo was worth it. The modern energy of Iloilo City, the joy of Friday nights at the business park, and the community vibe of Molo Mansion, as well as the famed Iloilo River Esplanade, all these made the city feel vibrant and welcoming!

Family travel in the Philippines isn’t always smooth. Kids get restless, seniors get tired, and ferries get delayed. But that’s part of the journey. What matters is that we made memories, both the beautiful and the frustrating, that we’ll be laughing (and grumbling) about for years to come.

Would we go back to Iloilo? Absolutely. But next time, we’ll think twice about bringing the car.

The Journey: Getting to Bacolod

Our trip began in Mactan, Cebu. We packed up our trusty Innova, waved goodbye to home, and drove across the island to Toledo City. From there, we boarded the FastCat Roro to San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. 

Total cost: Php 4,070. The breakdown went like this: Php 2,520 for the Innova, Php 168 CPA port fee, Php 135 city ordinance fee, and the rest for passenger fares.

Once the ship docked in San Carlos, the real beauty began. Driving along the Negros Occidental Eco-Tourism Highway was almost surreal. Kilometers of lush greenery, mountain terrain, and endless sugar plantations greeted us. 

Coming from the busier, more compact landscapes of Cebu, the wide-open views felt like a deep breath of fresh air. By the time we reached Bacolod, I was already impressed. The streets were wide, clean, and well-maintained, and the whole city carried a kind of calm progressiveness that reminded me of how different it was from my home city, Tacloban (which is a can of worms I’d rather not get into right now).

Day 1: Settling In

Sitari Residences Airbnb

We checked into Sitari Residences, our Airbnb home for the next three nights. Free parking (a win already!) was on the 3rd floor, and from there, we went down to reception to get our elevator keycard. The staff were polite and helpful, pointing us toward the mailboxes where the cards were kept.

The moment the elevator doors opened on the 20th floor and we stepped into our unit, we were floored. Almost 360-degree views of Bacolod City stretched out before us. Traffic trickling along Lacson Street, distant lights twinkling, and the rest of the skyline glowing softly against the night sky. As of this writing, Sitari might be the tallest building in Bacolod, and the views definitely made it feel that way.

The unit itself felt cozy and premium. The scent of air freshener hit us as soon as we entered, instantly setting the mood. My parents took the master bedroom, while the 3 of us squeezed happily into the second bedroom with a bunk bed. My son quickly claimed the top bunk, excited to have his own little “fort.”

Wi-Fi was fast, Netflix was ready, and my dad wasted no time claiming the couch and turning on the TV. Also, there were 2 toilets (though we could only shower in 1), so that was nice.  

Dinner at Boodie’s Bistro

By then, we were starving. With my dad’s limited mobility, we needed somewhere close by, so Google pointed us to Boodie’s Bistro. I read all the reviews, checked their Facebook page to make sure it was legit. It turned out to be a gem! It was slightly tucked away from the main road (Lacson St), but it served food that was both affordable and delicious.

We ordered a few dishes: grilled chicken salad, KBL (kadios, baboy, langka), lasagna, lumpia shanghai, and beef salpicao. Every dish was flavorful, warm, and came out quickly. Only one other table was occupied that night, making it feel like a private little discovery.

It was the perfect way to kick off our Bacolod adventure: good food, relaxed vibes, and the comfort of knowing we’d found our home base for the next few days.

Day 2: Highlands & History

Campuestohan Highland Resort

When you research things to do in Bacolod and nearby areas, one place pops up again and again: Campuestohan Highland Resort. Located in Talisay, about 35 kilometers from the city, it’s perched on the mountainside, surrounded by sugarcane fields and rooster farms.

The drive was smooth, but the higher we went, the foggier and colder it got. Suddenly, the massive Guinness World Record-holding rooster statue loomed out of the mist, along with dinosaurs, castles, and all sorts of quirky structures! Campuestohan is nothing if not eclectic.

Entrance was Php 250 per person, and the place was packed as summer break had drawn in families from all over. We found a cottage to settle into, then let Marco run off to the pool. Despite lifeguards on duty, we stayed close, watching him dive in happily while the rest of us just soaked in the cool mountain air. We didn’t want to swim because the water didn’t look clean at all. Plus, I could smell the chlorine from a mile away. Anyway, Marco was fine all by himself; he made a new friend - a boy about his age. Even though he didn’t understand Hiligaynon, they still played. Kids are flexible like that.

For lunch, we ate at the main restaurant behind the Dino Park. The food was affordable (it was our first time trying cansi!), and with the fog swirling around, it almost felt like dining in Baguio City. Later in the afternoon, a thunderstorm rolled in, forcing everyone out of the pools. We used the time to dry Marco off and wander around the other side of the resort, where the kids' playground was. 

There was a foam party going on at the wave pool, but we didn’t join. Watching the energy from the sidelines was fun enough. Marco joined a group of kids feeding an ostrich (the staff put food on pails attached to a long pole), so it was an amazing experience for him. We had some ice cream and snacks as well while walking around this side of the resort. 

Confession: after a while, the giant rooster's endless "Manok Ni Cano Gwapo" chant had me questioning my life choices. It was so annoying. It was super loud, and they played it every minute.

We also wanted to go on the giant slides that were near the giant gorilla statue, but it was still under construction. Hopefully, it will be done next time we visit Campuestohan! By 4 PM, the crowds had thinned, the parking lot was emptying, and we decided to move on.

The Ruins

On our way back to Bacolod, we made a quick stop at The Ruins, the famous remains of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson’s ancestral home, built in the early 1900s and burned during World War II to prevent Japanese forces from using it as headquarters.

The grounds were beautiful, with perfectly manicured gardens and that iconic shell of a mansion standing proud against the sky. Entrance fees were Php 150 for adults, Php 100 for seniors, Php 80 for students, and kids under 8 free.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to linger. Marco was tired and cranky, completely uninterested in the history or photo ops. So we snapped a few quick shots, admired the view, and called it a day.

Scarborough Seafood

Back at the condo, too drained to go out again, we ordered Scarborough Seafood via Grab. It was exactly what we needed: hearty food, no fuss, and the chance to relax with Netflix playing in the background.

Day 3: City Comforts

Church & Lunch

We started Day 3 by attending the English worship service at the FY Manalo locale in Bacolod City. Afterward, we had breakfast at the condo (thank you, leftovers), then debated where to have lunch.

Our first choice was Aida’s Inasal, but the air-conditioned section was packed and the heat outside was unbearable for my dad. So we settled on Lechoneria in SM City Bacolod instead. Pricey, yes, but the lechon was excellent, crispy skin and all. Hunger trumped photo ops. We only managed one quick food shot before devouring everything.

SM Bacolod & Kidzoona

The rest of the afternoon was spent wandering around SM. The highlight was Kidzoona, an indoor playground where Marco could burn off energy while my parents rested their legs. Watching him zip around from one corner to another made me tired just looking, but he was in his element.

We also picked up local treats and pasalubong: napoleones, piaya, butterscotch, and cheese tarts. Bacolod’s reputation as a city of sweets was well earned.

Dinner: Aida’s Inasal

We weren’t giving up on Aida’s Inasal, though. That evening, my husband and I went back, placed our order, and while waiting, walked over to Ayala Mall for coffee at Café Bobs. The alfresco area was lively, the perfect little date before grabbing our takeout and heading home.

Back at the condo, we finally experienced the real deal: Bacolod chicken inasal.

It was everything people say and more. Juicy, smoky, perfectly charred, with flavors that clung to your fingers. The chicken oil added that extra kick, and the portions were surprisingly generous. We ordered more than we could finish, which turned out to be a blessing because inasal leftovers make the best breakfast.

That first bite was my inasal awakening. Now, I cannot eat chicken barbecue the same way. I need it to be cooked the Bacolod inasal way. Good thing there are plenty of inasal restos in Cebu!

Day 4: Last Morning

Our last morning was all about slowing down.

We headed to the pool (if I remember correctly, it was on the 6th floor of Sitari) and found ourselves completely alone. The sky was clear, the water temperature perfect, and Marco couldn’t wait to jump into the deeper pool. We raced each other, splashed around, and just enjoyed the view of Bacolod waking up around us.

After an hour, we showered, packed up, and polished off the last of our inasal. Checkout was at 11 AM, and leaving felt bittersweet. Our Sitari Airbnb had been the perfect home base. It was convenient, comfortable, and with views that made you feel on top of the world.

But the journey wasn’t over. Our next stop was Iloilo, so we drove out to board the Tri-Star Roro to Dumangas, Iloilo. Total cost this time: Php 1,756 (with the Innova costing Php 1,000, arastre fee Php 386, plus passenger fares and terminal fees). Another adventure awaited us, but Bacolod had already carved out a special place in our hearts.

Practical Tips for Families Traveling to Bacolod

• Getting there: If you’re bringing a car from Cebu, the FastCat route via Toledo-San Carlos is reliable, though factor in port fees and passenger fares. For Iloilo connections, Tri-Star Roro to Dumangas is a good option (it’s first-come, first-served, so no reservations).
• Where to stay: Condos like Sitari Residences are great for families. Multiple bedrooms, full amenities, and views that rival any hotel. Plus, free parking!
• Food to try: Don’t skip Aida’s Inasal. Order extra. You’ll thank yourself the next morning. Napoleones and piaya are must-buy pasalubong.
• With kids: Resorts like Campuestohan and indoor play areas like Kidzoona are perfect outlets for their energy.
• With seniors: Pick accommodations and restaurants with easy access. Having a car makes moving around much more manageable.

Final Thoughts

Bacolod turned out to be everything I didn’t know I was looking for in a family trip. It was clean, spacious, and progressive, but still carried that laid-back provincial charm (a bit similar to Dumaguete in this regard). The food was consistently good, the people warm, and the city itself easy to navigate even with seniors and a child in tow.

If I had to sum it up, Bacolod is a city that welcomes families. Whether it was my son giggling in the pools of Campuestohan, my dad relaxing in front of Netflix after dinner, or all of us tearing into plates of chicken inasal, the memories we made here felt effortless and real.

Would we go back? Absolutely! In fact, I can already picture us sitting in that 20th-floor Airbnb again, planning the next day’s adventure while the lights of Lacson Street flicker below.

Getting There: Location & Accessibility

From Tacloban, Cansiboy Burabod Mountain Resort sits about 55 kilometers away, roughly an hour and a half drive if the roads are kind and your vehicle’s in good shape. It’s just far enough to feel like an adventure, but not so far that you need to commit to an overnight stay. That’s part of its charm for us: you can leave after breakfast, swim to your heart’s content, and still make it back home before dinner.

The roads are mostly paved, though the last time we went, a few sections were under repair. It wasn’t anything too tricky, just enough to remind you that you’re heading up into the mountains. It’s best to bring your own vehicle, as public transport is nonexistent, I think. The only thing we’ve seen around there are habal-habals (motorcycle taxis), and those aren’t exactly practical if you’re hauling kids, coolers, and picnic baskets.

The one tricky part is the signage or rather, the lack of it. Unless you’re familiar with Burauen, it’s not the kind of place you just “stumble upon.” My advice is to download Google Maps and save the route offline before you head out. Mobile signal gets sketchy once you climb higher, and you don’t want to be guessing turns when you’re halfway up the mountain.

Parking, at least, isn’t a problem. There’s plenty of space along the roadside near the resort, and since the area isn’t heavily developed, it never feels like a mad scramble to find a spot. You just pull over, unload, and let the mountain air hit you. It’s the kind of welcome that already makes the drive worth it.

Facilities & Layout

What makes Cansiboy Burabod Mountain Resort unique is how much of it feels shaped by the mountain itself. Instead of slick slides and manicured landscaping, you get a setup that looks simple on the surface but works beautifully for families.

The highlight, of course, is the spring water pools. There are three in total, flowing one into the other like natural terraces. Pool One is the source, fed directly by the mountain spring. It’s about 4 feet deep, clear enough to see the bottom, and icy enough to make you second-guess your decision to dive right in.

The water spills down into Pool Two, which is deeper (around six feet) and is usually the spot for the braver swimmers or those showing off their dives. Beside it sits the kiddie pool, shallower and gentler, where little ones splash around once they’ve gotten over the shock of the cold.

Around the pools, you’ll find a line of open-air cottages. They’re nothing fancy, just wooden structures with a table in the middle and benches for everyone to crowd onto. Some sit right beside the pools, which is where we always try to settle, since it makes keeping an eye on the kids so much easier.

The bathrooms and changing areas are about as basic as it gets: a couple of toilets, two shower stalls, and space to rinse off before heading home. Nothing Instagram-worthy, but surprisingly well-kept given how many people pass through daily. Staff clean them regularly, and I’ve never had that “I regret stepping in here” moment you sometimes get in rural resorts.

The Cold Spring Water Experience

Nothing prepares you for that first plunge into Cansiboy’s spring water. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been ten times or it’s your very first visit — the shock hits you every single time! The water is crisp, biting cold, the kind that makes you gasp out loud and scramble for the edge.

Kids, of course, process it differently. Some cry, some laugh, some go blue around the lips (mine included). But once the shock wears off, you can’t get them out of the water.

Timing is everything here. Summer days are perfect when the sun warms your skin enough that the cold feels like balance rather than punishment. Rainy or overcast days are less forgiving.

My advice: check the weather, pick a bright day, and pack extra towels and dry clothes for when you’re done.

And unlike chlorinated pools or salty seawater, there’s a purity to this experience. No harsh smell, no stinging eyes, no sticky and salty skin afterward.

Cottages & Amenities

After you’ve braved the spring water, the cottages at Cansiboy are where everyone inevitably gathers. Shivering kids wrapped in towels, parents digging into Tupperwares of home-cooked food, and uncles already halfway through a bottle of soda. They’re basic, open-air huts with benches circling a single table, but somehow that’s all you need.

We always try to book one of the poolside cottages. It makes life easier when you’re juggling food, wet clothes, and children who decide they’re hungry 5 minutes after getting in the water. The higher cottages, perched up the slope, have nice views, but climbing up and down with a plate of pancit or grilled pork isn’t as relaxing as it sounds.

Rental fees are very affordable. I think we paid less than a thousand pesos the last time we visited. And unlike many resorts, there’s no corkage.

You can bring whatever you like: home-cooked meals, snacks, cases of soft drinks, even karaoke if your family insists (and in true Filipino style, many do). There’s a small sari-sari store by the entrance for snacks and soda, but if you’re feeding a group, buy everything you need in Burauen town before heading up the mountain.

The best part is they don’t have strict headcounts, so you can squeeze in as many as your group can handle. I’ve lost count of how many times our extended family has filled one, spilling over with coolers, bags of chips, and kids weaving in and out in dripping clothes. It’s messy, chaotic, and exactly what you want on a family day out.

What First-Time Visitors Should Know

Arriving at Cansiboy is refreshingly uncomplicated. You pull up by the reception hut, pay the entrance fee along with the cottage rental, and that’s pretty much it. If no one is manning the counter, just call out a friendly “Maupay!” and someone will come along.

Staff don’t wear uniforms, so you’ll quickly learn to recognize who’s working there versus who’s just another family unloading a cooler.

Once you’ve paid, you’re led to your cottage. If the one they assign doesn’t suit your group - too small, too far from the pool - don’t hesitate to ask for another. The people there are pretty accommodating!

Crowds vary depending on the time of day. Mornings tend to be quieter, while the lunch hour draws in most groups. It’s festive but never too overwhelming, partly because the open-air setting keeps things breezy.

What to bring? Everything. Towels, toiletries, soap, shampoo, floaties for kids, and especially food and drinking water. The sari-sari store is handy for soft drinks and snacks, but don’t expect a full grocery’s worth of supplies. We’ve seen families bring portable speakers, even projectors for movies, though personally I think the mountain view is entertainment enough.

If you’re the type who prefers planning ahead, you might wonder whether you need to reserve in advance. In all our visits, we’ve never booked ahead, and we’ve never been turned away. That said, arriving earlier in the day helps, especially in summer when big family groups are more likely to fill up the poolside cottages.

It’s all very simple, and that’s the beauty of it. You don’t come to Cansiboy for polished service or fancy amenities. You come for the cold spring water, the mountain air, and the chance to spend an unhurried day together.

Final Verdict & Recommendations

After so many visits, I can confidently say Cansiboy Burabod Mountain Resort has earned its place as our family’s favorite. Not because it’s the most polished or comfortable resort in Leyte (it isn’t) but because it offers something harder to find: a genuine, back-to-basics experience that feels refreshing every single time.

If you arrive expecting polished amenities, you’ll be disappointed. But if you set your expectations right — basic facilities, budget-friendly pricing, and nature doing most of the work — then these quirks are easy to forgive.

For us, it’s a 9 out of 10. The missing point? Maybe the lack of a lifeguard, or the cottages slowly looking their age. But those feel minor when weighed against everything we love about it. And the fact that we keep returning year after year says more than any rating could.

If you still have energy after a swim, I’d also recommend driving further up to Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park. The scenery there is incredible, with mist rolling over the slopes, lush forests, and a quiet atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier towns below. We only managed a quick visit once because the fog was closing in, but even that short glimpse was worth it.

Will we be back to Cansiboy? Absolutely. It’s become a family tradition, one I can see continuing for years to come. And that, to me, is the mark of a place worth sharing.

Why We Chose Port Royale

When Port Royale opened in Tacloban, it instantly became a hot topic among locals. Waterparks aren’t exactly common in Leyte, and this one promised pools, slides, cabanas, cabins, and even overnight stays. For families like ours, who don’t always want to travel far for a quick getaway, it seemed too good not to try.

The truth is, convenience played a huge role in our decision. The resort is just a 10-minute drive from our house. No need for long car rides, no packing for overnight stays, no stress about forgotten items. We could literally decide in the morning and be there by lunchtime. That alone made it appealing.

So, with packed bags of food, swimwear, towels, sunscreen, and more enthusiasm than planning, we headed out for our first family adventure at Port Royale Tacloban.

Our First Tacloban Visit – June 2024

We picked a Friday in June 2024 for our first trip to Port Royale Tacloban. It was towards the end of summer vacation, the kids were restless, and the grandparents were game enough for a change of scenery. We figured a weekday would be quieter (and cheaper, with the weekday rates), and we were right.

When we pulled into the parking lot just after 10 AM, the place was still quiet. A few cars here and there, but not the weekend crowd we were bracing for. The kids immediately pressed their faces against the windows, yelling, “We’re here, we’re here!” My father chuckled but reminded them we hadn’t even paid the entrance fees yet.

The Numbers That Day

For our group of nine (my parents, my sister and her three kids, my son, me, and my son’s yaya), we paid:

• ₱2,700 for the entrance fees
• ₱750 for a cabana (good for 10 pax)
• ₱400 for two rented life vests (for the younger kids)
• ₱520 for drinks

We brought our own food to keep expenses down (lunch + snacks).

First Impressions

Walking into the waterpark, the kids broke into a run. The bright blue pools and giant bucket in the kiddie section were like magnets. We called after them to “wait for sunscreen first!” but of course, they pretended not to hear. We corralled them long enough to slather lotion on their shoulders and cheeks before finally letting them loose.

The cabana we rented seemed fine at first. It had a roof, benches, and enough space for our bags and food. We laid everything out and settled in. From there, we could see the kiddie pool, which was perfect for keeping an eye on the young ones.

But by noon, the sun had shifted, and the cabana was heating up. The shade wasn’t enough. We were soon wiping sweat from our faces and fanning ourselves with paper plates. LOL. We laughed it off, but I tucked that lesson away for the next time.

The Kids’ Playground

The kiddie pool became the main stage of the day. My then 8-year-old son and his 5-year-old cousin planted themselves under the giant water bucket, waiting for the clang that signaled it was about to tip.

“Here it comes, here it comes!” they’d scream, jumping up and down until the whole bucket crashed down with a roar of water. They’d squeal, laugh, and then immediately line up again. This cycle repeated for hours.

The slides were another big hit. The smaller ones were just right for them. Safe, easy, and endlessly repeatable. My son must have gone down a hundred times.

The giant slide, though, was another story. My eldest niece, then 16, had a bit of a fright when she whooshed down with alarming speed. Instead of stopping smoothly, she skidded across the slide and nearly crashed at the end. We were half-shocked, half-dying of laughter. But mainly, we were glad she was okay.

Around lunchtime, we gathered for a quick meal. The kids were too impatient to eat properly. They wolfed down a spoonful of rice and a drumstick each before begging to go back in.

By mid-afternoon, the park had filled up. More families arrived, the pools were louder, and the bucket splashes were accompanied by dozens of kids shrieking together. When 6PM rolled around, the hardest part was getting the kids out. “Just five more minutes!” became ten, then fifteen. My son clung to the pool, bargaining like his life depended on it. Finally, we managed to herd everyone back to the cabana and then the changing room to change into dry clothes. And we bid farewell to Port Royale for the first time. 

Our Second Tacloban Visit – May 2025

Almost a year after our first Port Royale experience, we went back older, wiser, and more determined to do it right. The cabana had been fine for our trial run, but we’d all agreed on one thing: never again.

This time, we booked a Cabin Room for ₱4,500, good for ten people. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely! From the moment we opened the door, the whole family knew this was a game-changer.

First Reactions

The cabin looked almost like a little condo tucked inside the waterpark. It had everything:

• Air-conditioning that blasted a wave of cool air the moment we stepped in. My dad sighed dramatically and said, “Ahhh, this is life.”
• A 50-inch Smart TV with Netflix, already logged in and ready to go. My sister immediately asked, “Pwede na tayo mag-watch ng horror dito!”
• A mini fridge where we stuffed our water and fruit.
• A hot-and-cold shower and a toilet with bidet, which my parents loved.
• A leather daybed, perfect for lying down even when still dripping wet.
• A balcony with a fan and dining table, shaded and breezy, where we could eat and rest in between swims.

The grandparents were instantly sold. My dad sat on a chair with the TV remote in hand. My mom went to work sorting and arranging our stuff on the day bed, dining table, and kitchen. The kids, of course, didn’t care. They were already halfway to the pools before we even finished unpacking our bags. Haha!

Swimming Upgrades

By this time, my son and his cousin are almost finished with their summer swimming lessons, so the pool wasn’t just for fun, it was practice ground (they also practiced in Layao Beach Resort in Marabut, Samar the previous week). Unlike last year, when they clung to floaties and rented life vests, this time they confidently swam across the adult pool, bobbing up for air and showing off their strokes.

“Watch me, Mommy!” my son yelled, splashing his way from one end to the other. His cousin followed closely, both of them racing like it was the Olympics.

The younger ones still loved the kiddie pool bucket, squealing every time the water crashed down. The teens alternated between swimming and hanging out on the balcony, pretending to “guard the food” while scrolling on their phones.

Lunchtime

Lunchtime was one of my favorite memories that day. We spread out all the food on the big dining table in the cabin room. Rice, adobo, lumpia, grilled fish, fruits, and chips. The cabin’s fridge made it easy to keep drinks cold, and the sink was handy for quick clean-ups.

The kids just wanted to go into the water. “Finish your food first!” my mom scolded, pointing at their half-empty plates. They gave her sheepish smiles and dashed off anyway.

My mom threw her hands up. “Ganito rin kayo dati!” (You were like this too back then!) she said to us, shaking her head. Full circle moment. Haha!

The beauty of having the cabin was that everyone had their own rhythm.

• Kids: Swimming non-stop, dragging each other from slide to slide.
• Teens: Half in the pool, half lounging inside. They even dozed off at one point, curled up on the daybed with Netflix in the background.
• Parents: Taking turns supervising outside, then escaping to the cool cabin.
• Grandparents: Watching TV, chatting, and occasionally dipping in the pool for a short swim.

Heading Home (Eventually)

Unlike our first trip in 2024, where we started packing up by 6PM, this time we decided to max out the day until closing time at 8 PM. And honestly, those last two hours might have been the best part.

As the sun began to set, the whole waterpark changed its vibe. The harsh midday heat was gone, replaced by a soft glow in the sky and cooler air. The pools looked different under the twilight. It was calmer, with fewer people around since some families had already left.

By 7:00 PM, we started the slow process of convincing the kids to come out. Of course, “5 more minutes” turned into 10, then 20. The pool lights flickered on, giving everything a slightly magical feel. Even I found myself lingering, not ready to call it a day.

Packing up was less frantic than last time. Maybe because we’d all had our fill, or maybe because the cabin made everything easier. The bathroom was clean, there was plenty of space to change, and a table where we could gather our things without chaos.

As we walked back to the parking lot under the night sky, tired but happy, everyone agreed that this time was much better than last year’s visit.

Facilities, Food, Safety & Practical Tips

One of the things I really appreciate about Port Royale Tacloban is that it’s not just about the pools. Yes, the kids would’ve been happy with nothing but slides and a giant bucket all day, but for the rest of us, it’s the facilities that really made the difference between “just okay” and “we want to come back.”

Pools & Slides

• Kiddie Pool: Clean, shallow, and packed with fun features. The highlight was definitely the giant bucket that tips every few minutes (though it runs on a schedule). It doesn’t run constantly, which actually makes it more exciting because the kids stand there waiting, squealing louder with every creak of the mechanism. Even some adults (including myself) couldn’t resist lining up under it for the big splash.
• Adult Pool: At around 4 feet, it’s not intimidating at all. Perfect for swimmers who aren’t super confident yet, like my son and niece, who had just finished their summer lessons. It’s deep enough for adults to cool off but shallow enough that you don’t feel nervous about the kids.
• Slides: Fun, but definitely something to be mindful of. The smaller ones were perfect for endless kid-friendly runs. The giant slides, though, were a mix of excitement and nerves. My eldest niece’s crash landing in 2024 became a running family joke, but it also taught us to remind the kids that not every attraction is meant for everyone.  

Cabanas vs. Cabin Rooms

If there’s one thing our 2 visits taught us, it’s this: the cabana is fine, but the cabin room is life-changing.

• Cabana (₱750): Cheaper, shaded, and a decent spot for bags, food, and resting. But by midday, it was scorching. My dad’s joke about being “niluluto” (cooked alive) wasn’t far from the truth. If you’re only staying for a few hours and don’t mind the tropical sun, it works.
• Cabin Room (₱4,500): Expensive at first glance, but when you split the cost among ten people, it’s worth it. You get aircon, a private bathroom, a daybed, a mini fridge, Netflix, a balcony, and actual space to rest. For families with seniors or little kids who need breaks from the heat, it makes the whole day more comfortable.

If I had to choose again? Cabin all the way!

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

On our first visit, we used the public changing rooms. They were functional and clean enough, but a bit crowded by early evening. On the second trip, having our own private bathroom in the cabin felt like such a luxury. 

Food & Drinks

One of the best things about Port Royale is that you can bring your own food (well, except lechon and catered food). That alone makes it so much more affordable for big families. Both times we packed our usual family staples like rice, fried chicken, pancit, adobo. Of course, snacks and junk food as well.

Drinks, we usually bought inside to avoid corkage hassles, though we did bring in a huge jug of water both times and just paid the corkage (much cheaper this way). For emergencies, there’s a 7-Eleven just outside the resort, which is handy if you forget something or run out of ice.

During our cabin stay, the fridge and sink made all the difference. Cold drinks stayed cold, leftovers stayed fresh, and cleanup was quick. It felt like having a mini-kitchen inside the waterpark.

Safety & Staff

Safety was one of my big concerns, especially with young kids and grandparents in the group. Luckily, Port Royale made us feel secure on both visits.

• Lifeguards: Always present, always watching. I noticed them blowing whistles when kids got too rowdy or when someone tried to dive where they shouldn’t. That alone helped me relax a little.
• Staff: Polite, helpful, friendly, and quick to assist.
• Huge & Free Parking Area: This one still makes us laugh. My father absent-mindedly left his car keys stuck in the door keyhole outside the car. Hours passed before my brother-in-law, while checking on the cars, spotted the keys dangling there. Nothing had been touched. It was one of those moments that gave us an odd kind of reassurance. If the keys could sit out in the open like that and still be safe, we felt our car was in good hands, too.

Practical Tips for Families

• Go on weekdays. The difference in price and crowd size is huge. Both our visits were weekdays, and while it still got busier in the afternoon, mornings were wonderfully quiet.
• Bring towels, floaties, life vests. Rentals are available, but it adds up. On our first visit, we rented vests for the younger kids; by the second, they weren’t needed as the kids felt confident they could swim on their own. The vests only slowed them down as they couldn’t swim underwater. Lol.
• Goggles, in particular, are worth bringing as the pools are chlorinated, so they can sting the eyes when kids practice diving or spend long stretches underwater.
• Pack food. It’s cheaper and more fun to share a family meal than to rely on whatever’s available onsite. Think potluck-style picnic, but with a fridge and dining table in the cabin.
• Sunscreen is a must. Reapply often. Trust me, you don’t want to go home with lobster-red shoulders.
• Plan shifts for supervision. With kids, it helps if one adult is always poolside while others rest. We rotated, and it kept everyone sane. Lifeguards are present, yes, but they’re watching over so many people. Can’t take that kind of risk with young kids.

Who Would Enjoy It Most?

• Families with kids — the kiddie pool and bucket alone will keep them entertained for hours.
• Grandparents or older relatives — as long as you book the cabin, they’ll be comfortable and can join in at their own pace.
• Parents — if you’re looking for a stress-free outing where you’re not worrying every second, this is one of those rare places where that can actually happen.

Final Verdict: Is Port Royale Tacloban Worth It for Families?

After two visits a year apart, our answer is a solid yes.

What stood out most to me was how every family member managed to enjoy themselves in their own way. The kids never ran out of energy, the teens had their mix of fun and downtime, the parents (aka me and my sister and bro-in-law) actually felt relaxed instead of stressed. And the grandparents, who usually end up the most tired, left smiling and saying they’d come back again. That in itself says a lot.

For our family, the biggest lesson was that the Cabin Room makes all the difference. The cabana was fine for a trial run, but if you’re planning to stay the whole day with a mix of ages, the comfort of aircon, a private bathroom, a fridge, and even Netflix is hard to beat. It turned what could have been just another hot, sweaty day into a proper family bonding experience.

Of course, Port Royale isn’t perfect. The giant slides can be a little intimidating (I myself only went once in 2024, I wasn’t interested in going for a second round). Being in the Philippines, the midday sun is unforgiving, especially in the open areas. And like any pool, the chlorine can sting your eyes if you’re diving around without goggles. But these are small trade-offs compared to the laughter, splashes, and shared moments we got to enjoy.

We paid around ₱18,000 for the overnight stay. ₱14,000 for the Barkadahan Room and another ₱4,000 for food. For what we got, I’d say it was worth it. Ten of us in one room, eating together, laughing together. You can’t really put a price on that kind of bonding. But still, it felt good knowing we didn’t have to split into separate rooms like we usually do at other resorts.

Transportation: We drove from Tacloban in two cars, a Toyota Innova and a Mitsubishi Adventure, both crammed with bags, snacks, and a few too many pillows. The trip took about an hour. Easy, straightforward driving with no traffic once you get past San Juanico (well that was before the bridge repair was announced).

Room: The Barkadahan Room is the star here if you’re coming with family or a big group. Spacious, cold air-conditioning, two bathrooms (lifesaver), and a balcony with an incredible view of the coast. Just note: it’s on the third floor and there’s no elevator.

Food: Portions were good, prices reasonable, and the blue rice was a fun surprise. Breakfast was plated and included in the room rate, while dinner had to be ordered earlier than we were used to. Don’t expect late-night meals here as Marabut winds down early.

Activities: Pools are a must, of course. They also offered free use of kayaks for about 30 minutes, which we didn’t get to try because, honestly, we spent too much time lounging and sleeping in. There were also cave and river tours available, but since we only stayed overnight, we skipped them. If you’re staying longer, it might be worth exploring. Marabut has a lot of natural beauty beyond the resorts.

What to skip: The ocean swim during jellyfish season. Trust me on this one.

Getting to Layao Beach Resort

From our house in Tacloban to Layao Beach Resort in Marabut, it’s about 45 kilometers, roughly 1.5 hours away depending on traffic. The route takes you across the iconic San Juanico Bridge, then along Samar’s coastal highway with views of small fishing towns, coconut trees, and the Pacific shimmering on the horizon.

If you’re not from Tacloban, Layao is still accessible. Marabut sits in the western part of Samar, facing Leyte Gulf and the Pacific. It’s a popular weekend spot for locals because it’s far enough to feel like an escape, but close enough that you don’t waste half the day just traveling. For families, especially with kids and seniors in tow, that short drive makes all the difference.

First Impressions: The Barkadahan Room

Packed with bags and snacks, we rolled up in two cars. But we couldn’t check-in right away because we had food from Jollibee, which we bought all the way from Tacloban. The guard at the gate said they charge corkage for food brought from outside, so we had to finish it before we went inside.

Anyway, check-in was relatively quick. I already made a 50% downpayment via Gcash a few days prior to reserve the Barkadahan room. But we had a nice little workout going up to our room because the Barkadahan Room was on the third floor. There was no elevator. My parents in their late 60s huffed a little going up, but they made it. At least it counted as exercise before the vacation food binge. Haha!

The room itself was massive. Cold air-conditioning, enough beds for everyone, and so many outlets that our phones, tablets, and power banks could all charge at once without a fight. Small win, but with a big family, it matters.

Then came the little surprises: not one but two comfort rooms (goodbye, bathroom lines), plus a balcony overlooking the Marabut coastline and Tacloban right across. The view was stunning, you know, the kind that makes you pause for a moment just to take it in. Rugged rock formations out at sea, waves crashing in from the Pacific, endless horizon. It set the mood right away.

Even before we dipped a toe in the pools, I knew this trip was going to be worth it!

Pool Time and Family Chaos

The real highlight of Layao, at least for us, was the pool area. Marabut itself is known for its rugged coastline and dramatic rock formations sticking out of the Pacific. The beaches here aren’t your typical powdery-white-sand kind. The water was murky, and at summertime, was home to jellyfish. Beautiful to look at, but not always ideal for swimming. Which is why having 4-in-1 pools at the resort was such a blessing.

My son and youngest niece were in the middle of their 10-session summer swimming lessons, so the moment they saw the water, they lit up. They spent hours practicing kicks, holding their breath underwater, and showing off “moves” they’d just learned.

By the end of the day, they’d tried every pool. The adults, of course, noticed the unusual shape of the whole thing (let’s just say it was… interesting), but the kids didn’t care. To them it was just four different adventures waiting to be splashed in.

What I loved most was how relaxed it felt. The water was cool but not cold, just the right temperature for lounging. Every splash, every laugh, and every jump into the water echoed around the resort, mixing with the sound of waves crashing on the seawall a few meters away. It was summer distilled into a single soundscape.

Staff, Music, and the Not-Free Floaties 

One thing I have to say: the staff were all warm and accommodating. I’d read some negative reviews online before we came, so I was bracing myself for possible rudeness or indifference. But from check-in to meals to my jellyfish mishap, everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful.

There was also live music in the afternoon, a talented singer who sang for hours, adding a relaxed, almost beach-party feel to the place. Guests could even go up and sing if they wanted, though none of us were brave enough. It was a nice surprise, a reminder that resorts like this often lean on simple but heartfelt entertainment.

And then came the floatie incident. Near the lifeguard stand, there was a pile of pool floaties. Dinner had to be ordered early though as the restaurant closed around 8 PM, which felt strange to us city folk. Back in Cebu, 8PM onwards is when we usually have dinner. But here, in this quiet corner of Samar, it was lights out early.

The quiet hit me the most. No traffic noise, no karaoke blasting from neighbors, just the soft hum of the ocean waves and the leaves swaying in the breeze. I found it both eerie and refreshing. You don’t realize how noisy city life is until you’re forced to sit with silence.

Oh, and the rice. I have to mention the blue rice. At first, we thought it was some kind of food coloring experiment gone wrong. Turns out, it was made with a blue flower (the waiter explained, though I forgot the name). It tasted just like regular rice but looked like something out of a travel magazine. The kids were fascinated. It was one of those small, unexpected details that made the meal feel special.

By the time we finished eating, we were ready to roll ourselves back to our Barkadahan Room and collapse into bed. If I’m being honest with myself, sleeping in that cold, spacious room while listening to the faint crash of waves outside might have been my favorite part of the whole day (my age is showing here hahaha!).

Nights in Marabut: Eerie or Magical?

If Tacloban is noisy, Marabut is its opposite. By 8 or 9PM, the pools were closed, the restaurant was done for the day, and the resort settled into a deep quiet. For someone used to late-night city life, it felt odd to call it a night so early. We stepped into the balcony and we were amazed at how dark it was. There was almost no light pollution, just the darkness of the sea and a sky heavy with stars.

At first, it felt a little unsettling. You could hear the waves slapping against the seawall, the chirping of insects (crickets, I think?), and little else. But once I settled into it, I realized how rare that silence is. No honking cars, no blaring karaoke from neighbors, no buzz of city life. Just peace.

The only downside? Mosquitoes. They were relentless, and after a while, we had no choice but to retreat indoors. Still, lying in bed later, cooled by the aircon and lulled by the muffled sounds of nature outside, I couldn’t complain. The stillness of Marabut had its own kind of magic.

Family Fun Beyond the Pool

The next morning started with breakfast at the restaurant. Nothing fancy, just plated meals with choices, but it was filling enough to get us going. Afterward, the kids spotted the resort’s playground and made a beeline for it. The kid-friendly obstacle course and open grassy areas kept them busy while the rest of us enjoyed lingering over coffee.

Once they’d had their fill of running around (and collecting wet grass on their toes and slippers from the rain the night before), it was straight back to the pools. By now, my son and nieces had already memorized their favorites and spent hours diving, practicing strokes, and playing endless games. It felt like summer camp compressed into a single morning.

And then came the highlight for the kids: ice cream at the front desk. It became their “reward” after all the splashing around, and honestly, nothing beats a cold cone after hours under the Samar sun. Sometimes, it’s those small, simple treats that stick in the memory just as much as the big things.

The Jellyfish Incident

One of the first things the staff told us was that it was jellyfish season, so it wasn’t a great idea to swim in the open sea. Marabut sits right on the Pacific side of Samar, and while the coast is dramatic and beautiful, it can also be rough and unpredictable. The Pacific isn’t exactly gentle here.

Of course, some of us didn’t listen (my dad, one of my nieces, and me).

The water looked inviting, and I figured, how bad could it be? Less than 5 minutes later, I found out. Something stung me, sharp and hot against my leg, and I bolted out of the water laughing and cursing at the same time. Jellyfish: 1, Me: 0.

Thankfully, the staff were quick to help. Someone from the kitchen came out with vinegar, the tried-and-true local remedy. It worked well enough, and the sting became just another funny story to add to the trip.

Lesson learned: when the locals warn you about jellyfish, listen.

Reflections: Why This Trip Mattered

When we finally packed up to leave Layao, I felt a little tug of sadness. One night just wasn’t enough. The kids were still buzzing from all the swimming, my parents seemed lighter and happier, and I found myself wishing we had just one more day.

Trips like this remind me why I push myself to work hard. My parents are in their late 60s now, and every chance we get to travel together feels precious. Time is moving fast, and weekends like this, even if it’s just an hour’s drive away, become the kind of memories you hold onto. Seeing my son laugh endlessly in the pool, my nieces running around the play area, my parents sitting on the balcony watching the sea… those are the images I carried home with me.

Layao didn’t “change” me in some dramatic way, but it gave me something just as valuable: another chapter in our family’s story.
